Specialist in Emergency Medicine.
Degree: I graduated and completed my surgical
residency training at St. Louis University

Hospitals.
Choice: Too much time passed to remember the
details, but after forty years in practice, I’m
reminded daily I made a good choice.
Work Experience: I served in the Air Force as a
general & vascular surgeon. I’ve practiced
continually in Alamogordo for nearly 33 nearly.
I’ve practiced at UNM
as part-time attending staff in the trauma
center emergency department for 16 years. I’ve
worked with AMR
Ambulance, several local fire and police
departments as their medical service director.
Special Interests: With my fire department &
law enforcement colleagues, we have had portable
automatic cardiac defibrillators in service for

Profession: Certified Nurse-Midwife-
Certified Nurse Midwives are advanced practice
nurses who provide primary women’s healthcare
services including OB/GYN care. In addition,
some nurse midwives choose to care for newborns
and infants to one year of age.
Degree: Bacholars of Science in Nursing
1995 from Eastern New Mexico University Portales
NM.
Masters of Science in Nursing 1997 University of
Texas at El Paso. Nurse-Midwifery Certification
Fellowship- 1997 Texas Tech Medical School- El
Paso Texas.
Choice: When I had my first child I didn’t
have a very pleasant labor and delivery
experience and I wanted to become a nurse to
help women to have a more supportive and
pleasant birth experience. Later after working
in Labor and Delivery as a Registered Nurse, I
wanted to further my education, so I thought
about becoming a Nurse Practitioner. However, I
didn’t want to give up taking care of women
throughout the birth process, So I became a
Nurse Midwife.
Work Experience: My first year as a
Nurse-Midwife I worked on the faculty of the
Texas Tech Medical School. The Nurse Midwifery
Faculty provided women’s healthcare and taught
both the OB/Gyn MD residents and the
Nurse-Midwifery students. I was then recruited
to start a nurse-midwifery service at William
Beaumont Army Medical Center, I served as the
director of this service for 4 years. I then
relocated back to NM and started a private
practice in Ruidoso, I became the first nurse
midwife to practice in this community and
continued my practice for about a year and a
half. Although, I loved midwifery the business
side proved a tremendous struggle. I closed my
practice and took a year to determine what
direction to take professionally. The fall of
2004 I was blessed in joining the White Sands
Family practice in Alamogordo, where I practice
full scope nurse-midwifery including newborn
care to one year of age. This is by far the
best position I have ever held.
Special Interests: What are some of your
special interests?I especially enjoy working
with young teen moms. Although, like most, I
would prefer that this experience be delayed for
them, I believe that it is important for them to
realize that their lives are just beginning and
although having a baby certainly complicates
matters, it doesn’t have to ruin the rest of
their lives. It doesn’t make them a “bad
person” and it certainly isn’t the end of the
world or the worst thing that could ever happen
to them. |
